Breakthrough in China's Pure Hydrogen Gas Turbine A Leap in Renewable Energy Technology

China's gas turbine technology started late and was once in a state of being 'trangled'. Although it has now obtained the independent capacity of light gas turbines (with power below 50 MW), there is still a big gap compared with the United States, Germany and Japan in the field of heavy gas turbines (above 50 MW).

State Power Investment Corporation Limited announced that the first domestic megawatt-level pure hydrogen gas turbine has successfully completed the whole machine test and verification on June 27th. The gas turbine burned pure hydrogen fuel to achieve ignition, speed increase, load increase, and stable operation at full load, and nitrogen oxide emissions met the standard (NOx emissions < 50 mg/Nm3), marking a major breakthrough in China's research and development of pure hydrogen gas turbines.

According to the official introduction, this project is led by State Power Investment Beijing Heavy Combustion Energy Technology Development Co., Ltd., with Shanghai Institute of Complete Sets of Equipment participating in the research of the fuel system and Hubei Company providing the whole machine test platform.

This project lasted for 2 years. On the basis of overcoming the key difficulties such as easy backfire of pure hydrogen combustion, high combustion pulsation, and high NOx emissions, a completely independent intellectual property micro-premixed pure hydrogen combustion technology, hydrogen turbine safe operation control technology, fuel system design and other core technologies were formed.

The official pointed out that the development of hydrogen turbines is of great strategic significance for seizing the commanding heights of the global low-carbon industry chain technology competition, realizing the overtaking in the field of high-end equipment of gas turbines, promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of China's energy, and building a new power system with new energy as the main body.

TapTechNews noticed that China has intensively introduced hydrogen energy industry support policies, and hydrogen gas turbines as the key to hydrogen-electric conversion have also become the focus of support by the Chinese government.

On February 4th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the 'Construction Guide of the Standard System for Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality in the Industrial Field', which pointed out the standards of technologies and equipment such as hydrogen-burning gas turbines and hydrogen substitution.

On March 18th, the 'Guiding Opinions on Energy Work in 2024' issued by the National Energy Administration clearly stated that it is necessary to deeply explore the technology of blending hydrogen and ammonia in thermal power.

On March 19th, the National Development and Reform Commission released the 'Announcement on Soliciting Opinions from the Society on the List of Advanced Green and Low-Carbon Technology Demonstration Projects (First Batch)', which included the 'electricity-hydrogen-electricity' new model demonstration project based on pure hydrogen gas turbine innovation of State Power Investment.

According to the 'Research on China's Energy and Power Development Plan in 2030 and Outlook in 2060' released by the Global Energy Interconnection Development Cooperation Organization, it is预计 that by 2050, the installed capacity of hydrogen gas turbines will reach 100 millio n kilowatts, accounting for 1.3% of the total installed capacity in China's electricity; by 2060, the installed capacity and proportion will reach 200 million kilowatts and 2.5% respectively.
