TapTechNews on May 17th, Tesla finally delivered the highly anticipated Cybertruck pickup at the end of last year. At that time, the official also released a promotional video, showing this electric pickup defeating the legendary sports car Porsche 911 in a drag race, and the Cybertruck achieved the victory while towing a trailer with another Porsche 911 on it.
This promotional stunt once made the onlookers amazed at the powerful performance of electric vehicles, and also made the belated Cybertruck seem worth the money. Tesla's chief executive Elon Musk said at the launch: The time for the Cybertruck to complete the quarter-mile drag race while towing the Porsche 911 is even faster than that of the unloaded Porsche 911!
However, is the truth really like what is shown in the promotional video? The automotive media MotorTrend decided to find out and replicated the test.
The test result was a big shock: it turns out that the Cybertruck towing the Porsche 911 couldn't beat any version of the 911 at all, not even the slowest 911 was faster than it. MotorTrend said that Tesla played some tricks for the promotional effect.
MotorTrend conducted a total of six quarter-mile drag races, and the Porsche 911 Carrera T all won. More importantly, shortly after Tesla released the promotional video, Jason Fenske of the YouTube channel EngineeringExplained found that what Tesla actually used in the video was an eighth-mile straight track, but it was not clearly marked (Tesla also admitted this later).
TapTechNews noticed that MotorTrend also conducted several rounds of eighth-mile tests and found that the Cybertruck could occasionally win over the unloaded 911. However, comparing the fastest results of the two cars, the final winner was still the Porsche 911. It is worth mentioning that in the drag race, whether it is an automaker or a racing enthusiast, the standard distance discussed is generally a quarter-mile. Insideevs said that Tesla chose the eighth-mile as the test distance but did not publicly explain, which makes people wonder if they knew that the Cybertruck could not win in the standard distance race.
Of course, the absolute performance of the Cybertruck is still very excellent. The high-performance version of the Cybertruck Beast can accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds, but the actual performance is not as exaggerated as Tesla's promotion.
