TapTechNews July 5th news, ten years ago, people predicted that MicroLED would subvert OLED technology, but now this technology has not reached the original expectation. As there is no return in the long term, the two giants, LG and Samsung Display, have reexamined their investment plans.
South Korea's ETNews stated that Samsung held a seminar on MicroLED TVs with its partners for the first time, and they believe that significantly reducing the production cost is a necessary condition for expanding MicroLED, and the goal is to reduce the production cost to the current 10% level within the next 2 to 3 years, and an internal working group has also been established for this.
South Korea's MoneyToday said that Samsung Display and LG Display have recently adjusted their MicroLED business strategies, and the decisions of both companies reflect the judgment that the marketability of MicroLED is lower than expected.
Among them, Samsung Display internally decided to continue relevant research and development (R&D) to ensure technological leadership, but the business expansion plan has slowed down. LG Display directly reduced the size of the MicroLED R&D team and considered transferring some MicroLED developers to the OLED department.
MicroLED TVs can be said to combine all the advantages of LCD and OLED, but it is not without any disadvantages. One of the most important points is that it is still a big problem how to miniaturize MicroLED to achieve mass production at present. Even large factories like LG and Samsung cannot solve it, which also explains why the prices of their MicroLED TVs are generally more than 100,000 US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 728,000 yuan).
Analysts and industry insiders believe that it will take several years for this technology to truly achieve mass production. Therefore, both LG and Samsung have slowed down their production pace, but Samsung is still willing to continue developing this technology.
