TapTechNews July 26th news, SK Hynix today announced that it has passed a board resolution to invest approximately 9.4 trillion Korean won (TapTechNews note: currently about 49.162 billion Chinese yuan) to build the first factory (Fab) and business facilities in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in South Korea.
SK Hynix said: The company will start the construction of the first factory in the Yongin Cluster as scheduled in March next year and complete it in May 2027.
The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster is located in Wonmyeon, Yongin City, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, covering an area of 4.15 million square meters. The company is conducting land use engineering and infrastructure construction projects. SK Hynix will build four advanced factories here to produce new-generation semiconductor products and work with more than 50 global material, component and equipment enterprises to build a semiconductor cooperation park.
SK Hynix said that after the completion of the construction of the first factory, the company will also successively promote the construction of the remaining three factories and develop the Yongin Cluster into a global artificial intelligence semiconductor production base.
The investment amount of this resolution includes various construction costs required in the initial stage of cluster operation, namely the first factory, supporting facilities, office buildings, service facilities, etc. Considering the time required for the design to prepare for the factory construction and the office building planned to be completed in the second half of 2028, the company has set the investment period from August 2024 to the end of 2028.
The company plans to produce AI-oriented memory and new-generation DRAM products represented by HBM in the first factory in Yongin, and will also be prepared to produce other products according to the market demand at the time of completion.
At the same time, SK Hynix plans to build a mini-factory (a research facility with 300-mm wafer process equipment that can verify semiconductor materials, components, equipment, etc.) in the first factory to support domestic material, component and equipment companies in South Korea for their technological research and development, verification and evaluation. The company will provide an environment similar to the actual production site in the mini-factory to strongly support partners to improve the completion degree of their self-developed technologies.
